A cross-sectional online survey design was used. Recruitment and data collection took place between 25th October 2021 and 6th May 2022. The sampling method was purposive, with participants recruited via 55 NHS Trusts and non-NHS organisations - all of which provided PR services in England. Eligible participants were healthcare practitioners who had a job role either running, managing, or assisting in PR programmes. Specifically, they worked in PR conducting standard face-to-face exercise programmes before the Covid-19 pandemic (i.e., before March 2020). No incentive was offered for completion. Data was collected using a bespoke self-completed online questionnaire. The survey was developed by building on previous literature, and included consultation with academics and practitioners who worked in PR or a related field to ensure face and content validity. The survey was also piloted with a non-participating PR service. As this study was concerned with the provision of standard face-to-face PR, participants answered questions related to PR before the Covid-19 pandemic. It was important to outline a timeframe in which face-to-face PR was stable and consistent. Ethical approval was granted by the Health Research Authority (REC REF: 21/HRA/4032; IRAS ID: 302999) and the University of Essex (REF: ETH2122-0177).
