1. Field trial at KWS Thriplow, Cambs. Data were collected on a population of barleys in a polytunnel. A fifteen-block experimental design was used with complete replication within each block. Two guard rows of barleys surrounded the entire experiment.

2. Two separate runs of this experiment were conducted in a Sanyo controlled environment chamber at the University of Essex. Each experiment had the position of each plant fully randomised.
